How much is gym membership costing you?

The average gym member visits the gym twice a week for 60 mins per visit. Let's have a look at how that time, and your money, is being spent...

20 mins doing aerobic exercise, such as jogging machines.
This kind of exercise is actually catabolic (muscle destroying) and will often make postural problems worse leading to more serious injury.

20 mins doing resistance exercise on fixed machines.
This kind of training is outdated, harmful to posture, terrible for the core and does nothing to improve functional strength. Of the 20 minutes, at least 10 will be spent sitting on the machine doing nothing. Most of the exercises are performed incorrectly. Only around 5 minutes of effective exercise will be performed each workout.

20 mins doing stretches and abdominal exercises.
Very few people know which muscles need stretching. Stretching the wrong muscles, ones that are already to long and loose, can lead to worse problems. In our experience, almost every abdominal exercise performed in large gyms is done incorrectly and are the cause of all sorts of problems from neck and shoulder pain to lower back and knee trouble.

  • Average membership = £30 per month
  • Average visits per week = 2
  • Average workout = 60 minutes
  • Effective exercise/week = 10 minutes (5 per visit)
  • Effective exercise/month = 40 minutes
  • 40 mins effective exercise = £30

corporate services

If you run a business, large or small, you need to read this...

  • Poor health and illness costs UK businesses over £2billion per year
  • Back pain and musculoskeletal disorders costs UK employers £624million per year
  • Staff turnover and sickness absences related to stress cost employers £1.3 billion and caused a loss of 90 million working days per year
  • 39% of university graduates believe their health would deteriorate once they started full-term employment.

Today the cost of poor health is no longer being incurred by the individual alone. Business and the workplace are increasingly bearing the cost of poor health in the UK, as the health of the average employer continues to decline.

Did you know over 1,000,000 people in Britain suffer from a musculoskeletal disorder, which, in their opinion, was made worse by their job. These disorders led to a loss of 9.5 million working days.

Over 2 million people suffer from stress related illness, with 600,000 new cases each year. Add to all this record numbers of mental health problems, obesity, diabetes and sleep disorders and the picture of the future workplace is a bleak one.

Staff absenteeism costs UK business over £2bn per year and greatly effects productivity, profitability, diminishes the competitive edge and often leads to poor standards and low customer confidence. However, this drastic decline in health is not only costing business right now, but is also eating away at the very fabric of our society. If things continue unabated, the problem for employers will not be simply dealing with staff sickness, but actually finding healthy, functional staff to begin with.

Taking good care of your most important asset

  • 44% of potential employees were more likely to accept a job if on-site fitness facilities were on offer.
  • 45% would be more motivated at work if they were able to exercise on-site in their lunch-break.

As an employer looking to maximise potential, delivering an effective wellness programme has many benefits :

  • Recruitment and retention of key personnel by offering an attractive employee benefits package and being overtly interested in employee welfare
  • Improved performance, productivity and pressure management capability
  • Reduces short term sick by up to 32%
  • Reduces stress levels by up to 71%
  • Enhances employee loyalty by up to 63%
  • Boosted morale and motivation by up to 69%

Happy, healthy, motivated employees are more productive and enthusiastic. Healthier staff will have fewer days off due to minor ailments such as colds, headaches and flu’s, as well as a lower risk of long term illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, cancers, diabetes, obesity, respiratory illness and back injuries.

Clearly the benefits of providing a good health programme are extensive. Higher profits, higher productivity, better working environment, happier staff, more effective workforce, reduced stress amongst staff, increased loyalty, the benefits go on and on. The alternative to this, as we have established, is a £2,000,000,000 profit loss and a whole heap of sick, miserable, unproductive workers.

The Solution

Despite the use of corporate gym memberships, the problem is getting worse. This is because people do not receive the right nutritional or exercise advice within the corporate gym environment. Most programmes are “off the shelf” and diet plans are mostly outdated and often doing more harm than good. The truth is that most employees using a corporate gym membership are left to their own devices and spend very little time actually improving their health. For the employer paying the bill, it is a very false economy.
